Key Takeaways
About 23.3 million ZRO is scheduled to unlock on October 20, 2026, mostly to strategic partners and core contributors. Trackers report slightly different totals, ranging from about 23.1 million to 23.6 million ZRO, worth roughly $43 million to $47 million at recent prices.
The same unlock can be described as 2.3%, 3.8%, or 5.9% of supply. Each figure is correct. They simply use a different supply number as the base, which is why you must always ask "percent of what?"
Supply is only half of the picture. LayerZero has run several buyback programs, including one funded by Stargate revenue, but buybacks and unlocks work on different scales and timelines. Neither one alone tells you what the market will do.
Why This Unlock Is Worth Studying
LayerZero is an interoperability protocol. It lets applications on different blockchains send messages to each other, which is the foundation for many cross-chain apps and bridges. Its token, ZRO, launched on June 20, 2024, with a fixed total supply of 1 billion tokens.
The October 20, 2026 release is a useful case study for three reasons:
It is one of the largest named unlocks of the week. Trackers list it alongside releases from Akedo (AKE), LMTS, GRAM, Plasma (XPL), and Humanity (H).
It is part of a recurring monthly schedule. That makes it a good example of how a "linear" schedule actually works in practice.
The project has also bought back tokens. That lets us look at supply going in and supply coming out at the same time.
This article explains the mechanics. It does not forecast price.
The October 20 Unlock at a Glance
According to Tokenomist data cited by BeInCrypto, the release is split across three groups. Tokenomist marked the event as pending verification, so these figures were projections at the time of reporting.
Recipient group | Projected ZRO | Share of this unlock |
|---|---|---|
Strategic partners | 10.99 million | about 47% |
Core contributors | 10.63 million | about 46% |
Tokens repurchased | 1.67 million | about 7% |
Total | 23.28 million | 100% |
KuCoin listed the unlock time as 6:00 PM in UTC+3, which is 15:00 UTC.
Why trackers show different totals
You may see several different numbers for the same event:
Source | Reported amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Tokenomist (via BeInCrypto) | 23.28 million ZRO | Marked as pending verification |
CoinMarketCap AI summary | 23.63 million ZRO | Reported as 5.93% of circulating supply |
CoinLaunch | 23.08 million ZRO | Lists two recipient rounds |
31.25 million ZRO | Older calendar view |
Differences like these are normal. Trackers build schedules from project documents, onchain vesting contracts, and their own assumptions. When a project changes its plan, for example after a buyback removes tokens from an investor schedule, some trackers update faster than others. The practical lesson is simple: cross-check at least two trackers and note each one's "last updated" date.
Percent of What? Reading Supply Metrics Correctly
This is the most important concept in the case study. The same 23.28 million tokens produce very different percentages depending on the base.
Base used | Approximate base size | Unlock as a share |
|---|---|---|
Total supply | 1,000 million ZRO | about 2.3% |
Released supply (Tokenomist) | 607.45 million ZRO | about 3.8% |
Circulating supply (some trackers) | about 399 million ZRO | about 5.9% |
Total supply is every ZRO that will ever exist. Released supply counts tokens whose vesting has completed. Circulating supply tries to count only tokens that are actually free to trade.
Why is released supply so much higher than circulating supply for ZRO? One documented reason is the LayerZero Foundation allocation. According to LayerZero's own token page, 183 million Foundation tokens were re-locked until the launch of its Zero network mainnet. Tokens can be technically released from a vesting schedule but still sit in a wallet that has committed not to move them. Different trackers treat these differently.
For assessing dilution, percent of circulating supply is usually the most useful number, because it compares new tokens with the tokens already trading. But you should know which base a headline is using before comparing it with another project.
How the ZRO Vesting Schedule Works
ZRO follows a common pattern for venture-backed tokens:
Token generation event (TGE): June 20, 2024. A portion of supply became liquid at launch, much of it held by the Foundation and distributed to the community.
Cliff: Strategic partner and core contributor tokens did not release at launch. Trackers describe a cliff mechanism before monthly releases began.
Monthly releases: After the cliff, tokens unlock on the 20th of each month. NullTX called this a steady monthly drip.
End date: Trackers place the final scheduled release around May or June 2027. Tokenomics.com lists May 20, 2027.
Original allocation, as described by LayerZero
Category | Allocation | Notes from LayerZero's token page |
|---|---|---|
LayerZero Foundation (community) | 38.3% | 183 million re-locked until Zero mainnet |
Strategic partners | 31.2% | Includes 40 million returned from the FTX and Alameda settlement |
Core contributors | Not specified | Vest on individual schedules tied to joining terms |
LayerZero's page notes that the gross monthly strategic partner release was 15 million ZRO, reduced to 12.7 million after a 50 million ZRO buyback. Tracker figures for October show about 11 million going to strategic partners, which suggests the schedule continues to shift as allocations change. Treat any single monthly figure as an estimate.
What "linear" means in practice
A linear schedule does not mean tokens trickle out every second. For ZRO, it means roughly equal batches arrive on a fixed day each month. Each batch is small compared with a one-time cliff, but the batches add up. Over the eight or so monthly releases remaining after September 2026, trackers suggest more than 250 million ZRO could still be scheduled, depending on the source.
Same token count, different dollar value
Dollar values change with price, not just with token count. NullTX reported that the September 20, 2026 release of about 32.6 million ZRO was worth roughly $35 million at a price near $1.07. The October release is smaller in tokens but was valued at around $43 million to $47 million because the price had risen. This is why token count and percent of supply are better for comparing unlocks over time than dollar value.
The Role of Buybacks
A buyback is when a project or related entity uses money to purchase its own tokens from the market or from existing holders. LayerZero has used several approaches, according to its own disclosures and news reports:
Program | What happened | Reported scale |
|---|---|---|
Purchase from early investors | Foundation bought tokens from strategic partners in September 2025 | 50 million ZRO, about 5% of supply |
Stargate revenue buybacks | After the 2025 Stargate merger, Stargate revenue funds monthly open-market purchases | 1.9 million ZRO for $2.8 million, per LayerZero's page |
Labs open-market purchase | LayerZero Labs bought ZRO in November 2025 | $10 million |
Fee switch | Governance-approved protocol fee whose proceeds would buy back and burn ZRO | Approved in three votes; activation status not stated on the page |
The Stargate connection
In August 2025, the Stargate DAO approved a deal for LayerZero to acquire Stargate, a cross-chain bridge built on LayerZero, in a deal reported at about $110 million. STG holders could redeem each STG for 0.08634 ZRO at a fixed rate. LayerZero said excess Stargate revenue would be used to buy back ZRO. In October 2026, Binance completed its migration of STG to ZRO.
Buybacks versus unlocks: keep the scale in view
Buybacks can reduce the number of tokens available, but they need to be compared with unlocks on the same scale. A monthly unlock of more than 20 million tokens is very different from a revenue-funded buyback measured in a few million tokens over many months. The September 2025 investor buyback was different in kind: it removed 50 million tokens from the investor schedule before they ever unlocked.
Also note the "tokens repurchased" line in the October unlock table. Trackers show repurchased tokens on their own vesting line. How the holding entity uses those tokens after release is not specified in the sources we reviewed.
Dilution Versus Demand: The General Mechanics
An unlock is a supply event, not a price signal. Whether it affects the market depends on several factors that no calendar can show:
Recipient behavior: Contributors and partners may hold, stake, sell, or hedge. Their cost basis and lockup terms vary.
Liquidity: An unlock worth a small fraction of daily trading volume is easier to absorb than one worth several days of volume.
Anticipation: Scheduled unlocks are public. Market participants often adjust before the date, not on it.
Demand side: Protocol usage, buybacks, staking, and wider market conditions all affect how many buyers exist.
As one KuCoin summary put it, a headline unlock total shows supply becoming transferable, not proof that it will be sold.
How to Track Unlocks Like This Yourself
Find the official tokenomics. Start with the project's token page or documentation.
Check two or more trackers. Tokenomist, DefiLlama Unlocks, CoinMarketCap, and CryptoRank all publish calendars.
Confirm the base. Note whether percentages use total, released, or circulating supply.
Identify the recipients. Investor and contributor unlocks behave differently from community rewards.
Look onchain. Watch vesting contracts and recipient wallets on a block explorer.
Read recent announcements. Buybacks, re-locks, and governance votes can change the schedule.

FAQ
How many ZRO tokens unlock on October 20, 2026? Tokenomist projected about 23.28 million ZRO. Other trackers report between about 23.08 million and 23.63 million. Small differences come from data sources and timing of updates.
Who receives the October 20 ZRO unlock? Mostly strategic partners (about 10.99 million) and core contributors (about 10.63 million), with about 1.67 million listed under tokens repurchased.
Why do I see 2.3%, 3.8%, and 5.9% for the same unlock? Each figure divides the same token amount by a different base: total supply, released supply, or circulating supply.
When does ZRO vesting end? Trackers place the final scheduled monthly release around May or June 2027, depending on the source.
Does LayerZero buy back ZRO? Yes. It has bought tokens from early investors, uses Stargate revenue for buybacks, and has a governance-approved fee switch design. The size of each program varies.
