Bybit vs Binance: A Practical Alternative, With the Security History Included
Guides

Bybit is worth comparing if you are looking for a Binance alternative and its services are available where you live. One fact belongs at the start of that comparison: Bybit itself suffered a major hack in February 2025.

The useful comparison looks at what happened, how the company responded, what you can use today and how much money you need to keep on an exchange.

Binance has announced phased withdrawal restoration following its October 2026 incident. Check the exact asset and network rather than relying on an old headline about suspended withdrawals.

First, establish whether Bybit is an option for you

Bybit’s service restrictions exclude US residents. Use a service and product permitted for your actual residence.

EEA users should examine the separate European service and its restrictions, rather than assuming that the global platform’s products and referral arrangements apply. The global restrictions page also contains a specific Dubai restriction relating to Bybit Virtual Asset Platform Operator LLC. UAE locations and legal entities need their own checks.

Before comparing features, identify the company serving your account, the products available to you and the terms governing withdrawals. An account you cannot legitimately use is not a useful alternative.

Bybit’s February 2025 hack belongs in the comparison

Bybit’s official incident timeline describes the February 21, 2025 compromise of an Ethereum cold wallet and approximately $1.46 billion in losses. Its later account describes financing, deposits and purchases used to cover the ETH deficit.

In a February 24 statement, Bybit reported restoring 1:1 backing for the assets covered by its reserves assessment. These are attributed statements about that incident and assessment, rather than a promise that future losses will be reimbursed.

The cold-wallet detail matters. Cold storage is an important security arrangement, but its signing processes, interfaces and people can still be compromised. A fair evaluation credits documented recovery while retaining that operational lesson.

Compare incident responses

Binance said it would cover stolen funds from its October 2026 incident using SAFU and corporate treasury in its October 30 update. That commitment differs from independently establishing that every affected customer has regained unrestricted access.

For either platform, separate three questions:

  • Replacement assets: Has the company stated that it acquired assets to replenish a shortfall?

  • Account access: Can your particular account withdraw the asset and network you need?

  • Legal protection: What rights and limitations appear in your account agreement?

A reserves announcement does not prove that a specific transfer has completed, while a successful small withdrawal does not establish the company’s entire financial position.

Build the comparison around your trading workflow

Bybit’s spot-trading guide describes market, limit and conditional orders, plus open-order and history views. These controls can suit users who want more choice than a single purchase quote, where the local service offers them.

For a spot user, test the route you need: funding the account, finding your intended market, understanding order controls and withdrawing afterward. You do not need to test every advertised product.

Compare the same transaction size on both services. Include the funding method, quote or spread, trading charge and withdrawal cost. A fee figure copied from a top-tier account may tell a new user little about their actual cost.

If you use limit orders, learn how to create, view and cancel one. An unfilled limit order is not necessarily a malfunction. A market order’s final execution price depends on available liquidity and order size.

For an infrequently traded asset, examine the relevant market rather than total exchange volume. A busy platform can still have thin liquidity in a particular pair. Moving a ticker does not guarantee an equivalent market or withdrawal network.

Access to derivatives should not drive a beginner’s decision. Leverage adds liquidation risk and may be unavailable under the local entity even when spot trading is permitted.

Read reserves claims with the right limits

Proof-of-reserves reports can make parts of an exchange’s asset position more visible. Their value depends on scope, date and methods. Some assessments include specified customer liabilities, without necessarily accounting for every corporate obligation.

The PCAOB’s investor advisory explains why these reports are not equivalent to financial-statement audits or assurance that assets will remain available.

Apply that standard consistently to both exchanges. Neither a reserves dashboard nor a successful recovery creates deposit insurance.

Make the exit route part of your decision

Before transferring from Binance, generate deposit instructions inside your verified destination account. Match the asset, network and any memo or tag on both platforms. Check the minimum deposit so the test amount can be credited.

Wait for the test to arrive before sending more. If a withdrawal remains queued, check the official status and support route. Ignore direct messages offering to “accelerate” or “unlock” funds.

After the test, decide what balance has a purpose on the exchange. Splitting funds between custodians can reduce reliance on one account, while adding accounts and recovery procedures to manage. Self-custody makes you responsible for keys and backups.

Our assessment

For eligible international spot users, Bybit belongs on the shortlist if its markets, funding methods and withdrawal routes fit the intended use. Include its incident history in that decision.

Eligible international readers can check the Bybit referral route here. EEA readers should use the appropriate local European route, and users in the UAE must check entity-specific restrictions. US residents are excluded under Bybit’s current policy.

Choose a working, permitted route and a deliberate custody plan. For other eligible options, read our Binance alternatives shortlist and OKX versus Binance comparison.
